Trauma Relief for Humanitarian Workers

responders

I just completed a HeartMath course about Trauma Relief for Humanitarian Workers. Did you know that 79% of relief workers experience mental health issues because of the care they give? Your capacity to help others depends on how well you can take care of yourself. HeartMath techniques can help responders prepare for the work they need to do by building their resilience and teaching them to prepare for the demands of stressful situations.

Strength (character not muscle)

Road Trip! The destination for this week is “Strength.” Physical strength may be admired but strength of character is more important.

What inner strength do you possess? How have you been allowing it to show up in your daily life?

Think of a time that you “survived.” What got you through?

This week, give a gift of yourself to another and reflect on how it impacts you.

The Value of Coaching

This is from last year, but I stumbled across this excellent article online at Chief Learning Officer about the value of having a coach. It’s sometimes misunderstood that coaching is to “fix” someone when more often it’s used to enhance performance. From the article, “It’s rare for an organization to offer coaching to someone who doesn’t offer enormous promise and potential.

Corporations invest a lot of money in coaching services for their high-performance, high-value individuals. But coaching isn’t just for the elite. The value of coaching in obtaining these positions can’t be under-estimated. Coaching is a substantial investment but one that pays off by creating a higher performing, more heart-focused version of you.

Through heart-focused leadership coaching, we work together as partners to build your resilience. To communicate with more impact and influence and connect with your team, we’ll explore eight aspects of a heart-focused leader:

  • creative
  • authentic
  • vulnerable
  • resilient
  • intuitive
  • empathetic
  • trusting
  • transparent

Goal setting, planning and accountability keep you on track to reach your desired destination. What could you achieve this year with a little coaching?

Playfulness (regardless of age)

Road Trip! The destination for this week (fittingly so) is Playfulness. Being an “adult” doesn’t mean you should forget what it is like to be a child.

This week, thoroughly enjoy yourself and have fun.

Roll on the floor, horse around, make a lot of noise and laugh.

If you have a house full of kids during the holiday, join in their games. Maybe even start one of your own.

Have a Happy Holiday!

Delight (have fun!)

Road Trip! The destination for this week is “Delight.” Experience the unbridled joy, silliness and wonder of life. Talk with your inner child and have fun!

Make a list of things that made you laugh as a child. Spend a few hours this week rekindling that spirit.

Play with a toy; the more silly the better.

If you can, spend a few hours with a child and look at the world through their eyes. Make note of the differences between how you typically react to situations and how they respond. Which would serve you better in your life?

Jot down a few ideas for how you can add more fun and joy to your work. Try one out this week.

Love (yourself before others)

Love

Road Trip! The destination for this week is “Love.” Love for self and others is really the true destination of our lives!

What is your definition of love? How does it show up in your life every day?

How can you more consistently show love for yourself?

This week, be more open to loving others; especially those you may have found less than “lovable” in the past.

Peace (balance and harmonize for focus)

peace

Road Trip! The destination for this week is “Peace.” Put everything in balance and invite harmony and serenity into your life.

Where can you simplify?

This week, spend more time in nature.

Each day, find time to be calm and practice breathing deeply. Use Heart Focused Breathing if you know the HeartMath technique.
